The trials of making a book trailer

The last few days have been a real learning experience for me. I've spend hours making a video, trying to get everything just right.

First my timing messed up so my tiles overlaped.

Then there is the music. Where do you find the perfect song to add for the background? When you find it, how do you cut it to end with the video?

And pictures. I searched a lot of the free royalty image sites, but when I get ready to download there is the mention of credits. I have no credits. How do I get them? Money of course. I admit there are a few sites where they are actually free, but I couldn't find everything I needed there.I got an account at fotolia. A dollar a picture. That's not bad. So, with my paypal account I buy 30 credits. I download six pictures and notice I only have 4 credits left. How can that be? For the smallest size, they're all a dollar each, right? I double check and the cowboy I downloaded was 20 credits. TWENTY DOLLARS!!! And he needs a shave and a haircut. My husband and son have made rude remarks about him all week.As a last resort, I went through my personal picture files and found three pictures I'd taken myself. From now on I plan to have my camera with me in case I see something I might someday want in a video. I tried to get my son to dress like a cowboy for a picture, but he wasn't interested.

I've trashed two trailers. Tonight I'll make the third and hope it's a charm. Check it out at www.myspace.com/lindalaroqueauthor Now I'm starting on one for Forever Faithful, coming out with Champagne Books in November 2008. Good luck out there making yours.

istock is a good place for royalty free photos. You still have to pay. "Free" doesn't mean a picture is free, it means you don't have to pay royalties on it. It's a little misleading.

For music I like -
http://www.stock20.com/commerce/index.php

They have a great selection for a very reasonable price. They used to give out the first one for free when you signed up.

What editing equipment/program are you using?

When it is all said and done you'll want to take your video to-
www.tubemogul.com

It is free and it allows you to do multiple distribution at one time. Of course, you still have to sign up for all of those sites initially, but then Tubemogul makes life really easy after that.

Be sure that, in the description of your video, you put your URL, but make sure you include the http://. If you do, some of the upload sites will make the link live and it is very easy to click on the live link and go to your site.

Good luck!

PS- If you contact that place that gave you the $20 cowboy they may refund your credits. Most places are user friendly like that.

I appreciate all the information on photos and music and will check out the sites you mentioned. I've already used the cowboy so I'll just chalk the twenty bucks up to experience. I'm using Windows Movie Maker as that's all I have. It seems to be getting easier.

Thanks for responding.

Hi Linda!

I wish I knew more about Movie Maker.
I did find this tutorial on editing with Movie Maker on HowCast-
http://www.howcast.com/videos/5154-Networkers-Learn-How-To-Edit-a-Video

Also, Reader's Entertainment TV will show your video for free-
www.readersentertainment.tv

Have you noticed how important the music selection is to the video? That was one of the first things that I noticed when I started making them. Sound really is key, isn't it?

I hope you have a great time making your trailers!

Cheers!
