Blessings of the Season
by Annabel Aidan
Yet another month where I get to share holidays with you! The timing of these posts this year is quite lovely!
The last few weeks have been challenging, to say the least, and I’m trying to find new ways to meet the challenges without turning into the type of person I don’t want to be.
My deep desire is to move with the season and turn inward, for a period of quiet and renewal. But outward forces won’t allow it at the moment.
There is good within the challenges -- for instance, I received a personal grant to write a play, and the organization for whom I’m writing it also received a grant. So I’m optimistic, if somewhat exhausted.
I’ve recommitted to my yoga/meditation practice, which, under the stresses, received short shrift. However, by remaining committed, the practices give me the tools I need to cope with the challenges.
Yet another example of the truth that’s there’s no such thing as “no time” - - we all have twenty-four hours in our day, and we have to choose how to use those hours. Constantly putting ourselves (and our writing) last winds up being detrimental in the long run.
We need to MAKE time for what’s important to us -- whether it’s writing or yoga or time spent with loved ones. We need to learn how to set, and, even more importantly, HOLD boundaries, reminding others that we do not exist for their convenience. It’s one thing to compromise, quite another to capitulate.
So, yes, during this holiday season, I will MAKE time to do the things my soul tells me I need to do -- spend quite time thinking, reading, watching the fire in the fireplace, playing with the cats, cooking. The other demands will be met, but they will be met in their turn, not by denying me what I need in order to meet them with strength and grace.
I hope you’ve all had a lovely year, and I hope the next one is filled with peace, joy, abundance, and good health.
